Besiktas are in talks with former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to become their new head coach

The 51-year-old has been out of management since November 2021, when he was sacked by Man Utd following poor form.

Before joining United, Solskjaer was in charge of Molde twice and also had a short spell at Cardiff City.

At Old Trafford, he initially replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December 2018, before signing a three-year contract in March 2019 after steering the ship.

During his time at Man Utd, the Norwegian led the club to second place in the Premier League and the Europa League final, but left the club without winning a trophy.

Now Solskjaer has been nominated by Besiktas, who currently play in the Turkish Super Lig, to fill the managerial vacancy after parting ways with former Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona player Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November.

“Our company has started negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the position of technical director of the senior football team,” the club said in a statement.

If appointed, a battle between Solskjaer and Mourinho looms as Besiktas will face Fenerbahce away in early May, a game that could be crucial for both teams.

Besiktas may still be in the hunt for European qualification, while Fenerbahce may have closed the gap on league leaders Galatasaray.

Furthermore, a return to Old Trafford could be on the cards for Solskjaer.

However, a possible reunion largely depends on Besiktas as they still have a lot of work to do to avoid being eliminated from the Europa League in the group stage.

As things stand, they are in 28th place in the table, but are only one point behind the play-off places with two games remaining.
